I.T.W Background

World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated on May 17 each year since 1969, commemorating the founding of the International Telecommunication Union in 1865, when the first International Telegraph Convention was signed in Paris.
In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly called for the same day to also be observed as World Information Society Day, with the aim of highlighting the importance of information and communication technologies and their role in development.
In 2006, the two occasions were unified under the name (WTISD). This day aims to raise awareness of the role of the internet and communication technologies in supporting societies and economies, as well as contributing to bridging the digital divide, with a main theme selected each year.
